ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — An estimated 30 million to 40 million Americans suffer from dry eye disease, a common condition that occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or when tear quality is insufficient to properly lubricate the eye.

Tears play a critical role in maintaining clear vision and protecting the eye’s surface. Without adequate lubrication, patients may experience irritation, blurred vision and discomfort.

One of the leading causes of dry eye disease is Meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD, which occurs when oil-producing glands in the eyelids do not function properly. The condition is believed to account for roughly 86 percent of dry eye cases and can significantly affect quality of life. Symptoms often include a gritty or foreign-body sensation, eye pain, fluctuating vision, and excessive tearing.

Treatment options vary depending on severity and underlying causes. Common approaches include over-the-counter artificial tears, prescription eye drops and in-office procedures designed to improve gland function and reduce inflammation.

Asheville Eye Associates offers an FDA-approved light therapy known as OptiLIGHT, which uses intense pulsed light to target inflammation associated with MGD. The treatment is designed to safely deliver controlled light to the affected area, with results often achieved over a series of sessions.

Eye care professionals say patients experiencing persistent symptoms should seek evaluation, noting that effective treatment plans can provide meaningful relief.

Appointments can be scheduled through local providers to determine appropriate care options, including whether advanced therapies such as intense pulsed light treatment may be beneficial.
