SWANNANOA, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The U.S. Postal Service will relocate retail services from the Swannanoa Main Post Office after determining the former building was damaged beyond repair, according to Buncombe County Commissioner Jennifer Horton.

Horton said in a social media post she had received final notice from the United States Postal Service confirming the decision to move forward with a new location. The replacement facility will be situated as close as possible to the original site and within a one-mile radius, according to the agency.

The former Swannanoa Post Office at 2311 U.S. 70 was destroyed during Tropical Storm Helene in September 2024.

In March, the Postal Service mailed notices asking residents to submit written feedback about relocating the Swannanoa Post Office to a new site within one mile of its former location. The mailing did not identify a proposed site, prompting frustration among some residents who said they were asked to comment without knowing where the facility might be built.

In the meantime, postal services for Swannanoa customers will continue at the Asheville Grace Station Post Office until the new facility is open and fully operational.

Horton said the change is significant for local residents and businesses who depend on regular mail service.

“Access to postal services is important for families, businesses, seniors and neighbors,” Horton said in a statement. “While this is the Postal Service’s final decision, I remain committed to staying engaged and keeping our community informed as next steps move forward.”

No timeline or specific site for the new facility has been publicly confirmed. Horton said she has heard speculation about a possible location but will only share details once they are officially verified.
