ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — UNC Asheville athletes, students and staff are mourning the death of track and field coach Joel Williams, who died Saturday, Feb. 7, following a battle with cancer.

Williams spent more than 18 years with the Bulldogs, including 13 seasons as an assistant coach before being named head coach of the track and field program in 2020. During his tenure, he coached more than 100 athletes to all-conference honors and helped guide the program to 12 appearances at the NCAA National Championships.

“The impact that Joel made on our university extends far beyond wins, records and championships,” Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone said in a statement. “He was a man of deep character who led with humility, integrity and a genuine love for his student-athletes.”

Cone said Williams’ influence was felt across campus and throughout the track and field community, noting his ability to build strong relationships and elevate those around him.

Known for his passion for teaching technique and his belief in the power of sport, Williams served as a mentor and advocate for his athletes both on and off the track.

“Joel’s legacy will live on through the countless young men and women he influenced, the culture he helped build, and the standards of excellence he set for our program,” Cone said.
