ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Asheville Parks & Recreation will install a temporary skating rink at 50 Asheland Ave. to replace the Carrier Park facility damaged by Tropical Storm Helene.

The rink, which will accommodate recreational skating and inline hockey, will be built in a municipal parking lot next to the ART Station. It will remain in place until a permanent facility is constructed.

The city issued a request for qualifications on July 22 for construction administration services. A contract is expected to go before Asheville City Council on Sept. 9. Once approved, construction can begin.

The rink at Carrier Park sustained significant damage during Helene, prompting officials to find an interim solution that maintains similar amenities.

Funding for the project will come from Community Development Block Grant funds and private donations.
