Suspect killed, officer injured in Asheville police shooting

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — An Asheville police officer was injured and a suspect was killed following an officer-involved shooting Tuesday night on Hendersonville Road, authorities said.

Officers with the Asheville Police Department responded around 9:45 p.m. April 21 to a report of a person with a gun at a business in the 1900 block of Hendersonville Road.

According to police, officers approached the entrance when the suspect fired at them through a glass door. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect.

After the scene was secured, the suspect was taken to a local hospital for treatment, where he later died April 22, police said.

One officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries from broken glass caused by the gunfire.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been notified and will conduct an independent investigation in accordance with department protocol.
