Small earthquake reported near Newland early Saturday

NEWLAND, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A small earthquake was reported in Western North Carolina early Saturday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The USGS said a magnitude 1.7 earthquake struck at 1:06 a.m. about 4.2 miles west-southwest of Newland. The quake occurred at a depth of about 1.2 miles.

This quake comes just days after one rattled parts of Tennessee. The agency reported a magnitude 1.8 quake about 11:05 a.m. Dec. 27 in Knoxville, Tennessee. That quake occurred at a depth of roughly 5.7 miles.

No damage or injuries were immediately reported from either earthquake.
