BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Black Mountain Police Department said social media posts about security cameras in the town have sometimes been inaccurate or incomplete.

The town approved five Flock Safety cameras in 2022 and has not added any since. However, local businesses and neighborhoods have installed additional cameras on their own.

Lowe’s Corporation has equipped all of its parking lots nationwide with the cameras, while Ingles, Kearfott and the ABC Store have installed them locally, police said in a social media post. Homeowners associations across the country are also using the technology to protect homes and families, the department said.

Police credited the cameras with helping solve a recent series of car break-ins spanning Black Mountain to Asheville.

In 2024, Black Mountain’s Flock cameras generated 105 alerts on wanted persons, missing adults or children and stolen vehicles or tags. Officers recovered 17 stolen cars and located seven wanted or missing people. In one case, a stolen vehicle was recovered with a deceased person inside and the suspect still in custody, the department said.

“Flock cameras are an incredible tool for keeping our community safe,” the department said, noting that more than 400 communities in North Carolina already use the system.
