Joan Conrad Payne, 65, of Asheville, N.C., died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Thursday, May 2, 2024 after hemorrhagic shock caused by a severe stroke.

Joanie was born on January 14, 1959 in Washington, DC. After Joanie graduated from Clyde A. Erwin High School, Class of 1977, she met and fell in love with her best friend and future husband, Nathan Payne while they were both working at Winn-Dixie Supermarket.

Joanie went on to become a mother and worked as an educational assistant at Leicester Elementary School until she retired. She was loved by her students and fellow colleagues. Her home was filled with gifts and hand-drawn pictures from all of her students throughout the years.

Joan loved classic rock, walking on the beach with her daughter collecting seashells and shark’s teeth, and watching her granddaughter eat chocolate! She had a special sense of humor and a smile that can never be forgotten.

Joanie was predeceased by her parents John and Harriet Conrad; sister Patricia Conrad McMahon, and husband Nathan Payne in 2008. She is survived by her daughter Alexzandreia Kline; her granddaughters Violet and Hazel Kline; Son-In-Law Evan Kline; sibling Susan Conrad Queen; and her beloved pet Cleo.

Services will be held at Asheville Area Alternative (702 Riverside Dr) on Saturday, May 11 at 1pm. Please wear your blue jeans.
