HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The city of Hendersonville is calling on volunteers to help clean up local waterways later this month in the wake of Tropical Storm Helene.
The city’s Stormwater Division, in partnership with Asheville GreenWorks, will host a stream cleanup along Mud Creek from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20.
“Spending a few hours paddling down Mud Creek and picking up trash is both enjoyable and rewarding,” Hendersonville’s stormwater director Michael Huffman said in a news release. “Stream cleanups offer a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors, improve our local waterways and see a positive impact right away.”
Organizers said past cleanups have removed thousands of pounds of debris, including tires, scooters, barrels and even mattresses.
Volunteers will be provided with garbage bags, gloves, safety vests, water and waders if needed. Canoes will be available for up to a dozen participants, though people are encouraged to bring their own boats.
Participants should wear outdoor clothes that can get muddy and closed-toe shoes. The city will collect and dispose of all trash after the event.
Those interested can register online through the city’s Stream Cleanup Registration Form.
