Deputy shoots suspect during domestic incident in Haywood County

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A person was injured Sunday evening after a Haywood County sheriff’s deputy fired a service weapon during a domestic call, authorities said.

Deputies with the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office responded around 5:45 p.m. to a reported domestic incident on Old Clyde Road. During the response, the person involved attacked a deputy, according to the sheriff’s office.

The deputy then discharged his service weapon, striking the person, the sheriff’s office said. The deputy was not injured.

Deputies at the scene provided medical aid until Haywood County Emergency Medical Services arrived. The injured person was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. No information was released about the person’s condition.

The incident remains under investigation. In accordance with department protocol, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been asked to conduct an independent review. Authorities said no additional details would be released at this time.
