ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A crash closed a section of Smokey Park Highway/U.S. 19 near Interstate 40 in Candler during the Monday morning commute, officials said.

The road was shut down around 6 a.m. and is expected to remain closed until about 9 a.m., according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

A second crash about 6:30 a.m. in that same area has closed one lane and blocked access to I-40 westbound, officials said

The left lane is closed heading northbound near the I-40 interchange, according to transportation officials. One of two lanes is shut down, and drivers should expect major delays in the area.

Authorities warned drivers to expect heavy traffic delays in the area and urged them to seek alternate routes until the scene is cleared.
