Car plunges into French Broad River from Lyman Street

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Asheville fire crews rescued a driver Tuesday morning after a car went over an embankment into the French Broad River off Lyman Street, officials said.

The call came in about 7:45 a.m. in the River Arts District, according to Asheville Fire Department Communication Specialist John Harbin. Crews performed a low-angle rescue to safely bring the driver up the embankment after removing the person from the vehicle.

The driver, who was the only occupant of the car, was taken to a hospital. No further details about the victim’s condition were immediately available.

Lyman Street was temporarily closed during the response, which cleared just after 9 a.m.
