ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Beaucatcher Tunnel will close overnight for a scheduled inspection, according to the city of Asheville.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation will close the tunnel from 9 p.m. Monday until 5 a.m. Tuesday while crews conduct the inspection. The routine inspection is performed every other year to assess the tunnel’s condition and ensure ongoing safety.

Drivers should use Interstate 240 as a detour during the closure.

The Beaucatcher Tunnel is a 750-foot historic landmark that carries U.S. 70 through Beaucatcher Mountain, connecting downtown Asheville with East Asheville along Tunnel Road and College Street.

NCDOT is responsible for the tunnel’s structural maintenance and inspections, which can require occasional overnight closures for servicing and evaluation.
