ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk and run will return to downtown Asheville on Saturday, Oct. 18, with festivities beginning in Pack Square Park.

The event kicks off with music at 9 a.m., followed by a welcome at 9:45 a.m. The 5K walk and run is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at 80 Court Plaza.

Presented by White Labs, Eaton and Mission Health, the walk is part of the nationwide Making Strides movement, which raises money for breast cancer research and support programs. Organizers said the Asheville event has raised nearly $40,000 so far toward its $50,000 fundraising goal.

This year’s event will feature a new option for participants to honor loved ones with tribute yard signs. Each sign costs $25, will be displayed during the event and can be taken home afterward. The order deadline is Oct. 10.

The American Cancer Society describes Making Strides as a celebration of courage and hope that helps ensure more people have access to lifesaving resources and the opportunity for longer, healthier lives.
