ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Heads up, travelers! Some road closures will make it a little more difficult getting around the Asheville area this weekend.

The North Carolina Department of Transporation (NCDOT) says another round of road closures are coming to Interstate 40 West.

For a second consecutive weekend, a contractor for NCDOT plans to close a 4-mile stretch of I-40 West, allowing crews to safely perform rehabilitation operations on a bridge between Hendersonville Road and I-26. The following is information released by NCDOT:

Weather permitting, crews from DBA Harrison Construction Company of Asheville will close I-40 West from Hendersonville Road (Exit 50) to I-26 at 8 p.m. Friday night, Aug. 23, through 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 26 to work on the westbound bridge over the French Broad River.

The primary detour will utilize I-240 West starting at Exit 53B. Digital signs across the area notify motorists to use I-240 West for I-40 East being closed ahead. The Brevard Road onramp to I-40 West will also be closed with traffic detoured to utilize the I-240 West detour route.

Planned operations this weekend include scarifying the bridge over the French Broad River as part of the overall resurfacing.

The $27.9 million interstate rehabilitation project includes roadway resurfacing and bridge overlays. It will also address spalling concrete on bridge substructure components and improve the riding surface of the four I-40 bridges over Hominy Creek and two bridges over the French Broad River. The contract calls for completion in the spring of 2026.
