POLK COUNTY, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A magnitude 2.6 earthquake struck near Polk County late Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake was recorded at 11:14 a.m. at a depth of about 0.1 miles, making it extremely shallow. Shallow quakes are often felt more strongly than deeper ones because they occur closer to the surface.
